— Police have arrested a Guilderland couple accused of stabbing a man inside his Colonie home early Saturday after a night of drinking.

After the night out, Elias K. Deligiannis, 33, and his girlfriend, Janell F. Schwanke, 28, returned to the home of 48-year-old Raymond Klein at 17 Birch Tree Road, where they continued to drink, police said. The couple apparently knew Klein through his wife, who was a colleague of Schwanke, said Colonie police Lt. Robert Winn.

Just after midnight, police received a report of a stabbing at the house. When patrol officers responded, they encountered a grisly scene. Schwanke was seen leaving the house, covered in blood, and attempting to flee. Her boyfriend, Deligiannis, left soon after, and he too was covered in blood. He also had facial injuries and a laceration on his hand, which were treated at Albany Medical Center.

Inside, officers found Klein with numerous stab wounds to his head, back and arms. He was transported to Albany Med and determined to have suffered at least seven stab wounds and a collapsed lung. He has since been released and is recovering at home, said Winn.

Deligiannis was charged later Saturday morning after his release from the hospital. He is facing charges of first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

Police found the knife they believe was used to stab Klein in his girlfriend’s purse. Schwanke was taken to the police station for an interview, and charged with felony tampering with physical evidence.

Winn said the exact motive for the stabbing remains unclear. The altercation began as an argument, he said, and then escalated into a fight. At some point, Deligiannis produced a knife and stabbed Klein before leaving the house, he said.

“What exactly it was about, we don’t have any real clarification on that yet,” he said. “Alcohol was certainly involved in some of the parties. They had been at several establishments prior to going back to the house, where they continued to drink.”

Deligiannis and Schwanke, who live at 1980 Western Ave., were arraigned Saturday in Colonie Justice Court and sent to the Albany County jail. Their cases have been referred to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office for further action.
