Ad agency to close Albany publishing operation
ALBANY A Texas-based advertising agency plans to lay off 37 local employees when it shutters its Albany publishing operations this summer.
SuperMedia LLC, an advertising agency that markets for small and medium-sized business through print, online, mobile and social media, has publishing and sales operations at 16 Corporate Woods Boulevard, an Albany office building that houses law and tech firms.
SuperMedia employs 37 at its publishing operation, which prints Yellow Pages and Verizon directories. In a notice filed Tuesday with the state Department of Labor, the company cited economic reasons for the closure, which will happen June 28.
The sales portion of its Albany operations, which employs 20, will remain open.
SuperMedia has had some presence in the Capital Region since at least 1984, when it existed as a phone company in North Greenbush, said company spokesman Andy Shane. Over the years, the company changed hands and underwent mergers until 2006, when it spun off from Verizon and formed SuperMedia LLC. Five years later, it moved into office space on Corporate Woods Boulevard.
"We've been and will continue to be in Albany for quite some time," said Shane.
SuperMedia has two other sales offices in upstate New York — in Syracuse and Buffalo.
"We are marketing consultants for local businesses," said Shane. "So in Albany, we approached local businesses and established ourselves at a time when Yellow Pages was really the only game in town. As technology has evolved throughout the years, so have we. Right now, we offer our clients everything from mobile websites to monitoring and maintaining Facebook pages."
While Yellow Pages was the company's legacy, so to speak, fewer businesses now rely on the traditional telephone directory. Some of the local publishing responsibilities will relocate to SuperMedia's other offices nationwide, said Shane.
"Because of the economics and overall performance of the company over the last few years, we've had to look at different ways of maximizing efficiencies throughout the company," he said.
In a recent year-end financial report, SuperMedia reported operating revenue of more than $1.35 billion in 2012, a decline of $288 million, or 17.5 percent, since 2011.
