MALTA Two U.S. Navy members were killed in a head-on crash Thursday night on Route 9.
The accident happened just before 10 p.m. just south of the Malta Drive-In. The driver of a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon traveling south on Route 9 was operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed when it entered the median of the roadway and tried to pass another vehicle, according to state police. The Hyundai then traveled sideways into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a 2011 Toyota driven by 45-year-old Jason Meraner of Ballston Spa.
Meraner suffered non-life-threatening knee, back and neck injuries in the collision and was transported by ambulance to Albany Medical Center.
The driver and passenger in the Hyundai were killed. Police are not releasing the names of the victims pending notification of relatives.
Witnesses are being interviewed and the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is using evidence from the scene to determine the sequence of events in the collision. Evidence thus far has determined that the southbound vehicle was exceeding the speed limit and being operated in an erratic manner.
A stretch of Route 9 just south of Saratoga Springs was closed for several hours after the crash.
