SANDY: Tappan Zee Bridge closing at 4 p.m.
NEW YORK STATE State officials announced they will close down the Tappan Zee Bridge to all traffic at 4 p.m. due to weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy.
An immediate ban was issued for all trucks, buses, and motorcycle traffic on the bridge. Although the bridge structure is safe, it will remain closed until conditions allow for safe traffic again.
Southbound traffic on the state Thruway will be diverted to leave the roadway at or before exit 13, Palisades Interstate Parkway. Local traffic will be able to continue southbound to exits in West Nyack and Nyack.
Northbound bridge traffic will be instructed to leave the roadway at Exit 8 to the Cross Westchester Expressway. Local traffic will be able to continue northbound to Exit 9 in Tarrytown.
Motorists will be advised regarding these alternate routes. Variable message systems and highway advisory radio system broadcasts will be activated to notify motorists.
State officials are also preparing restrictions for the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the RFK Bridge.
