Audit scolds Niskayuna school district for draining surplus

Auditors have cautioned Niskayuna school officials against using too much of the district’s surplus to balance its budget. Jim Amell of Marvin and Company told the Board of Education last week that it was a “clean audit” with no improprieties found. However, the district has drained its surplus and has long-term liabilities. The district’s “unrestricted fund balance” — which can be used for any purpose — had only $17,660 in it as of June 30. ...

I wonder how much of this is due to the former superintendent's determination to have a full day kindergarten - he had to build out the elementary schools and hire more staff. Now he's left a mess for his successors to clean up.
