— A baby black bear spotted hanging out in a tree in Amsterdam likely moved on overnight, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Amsterdam police were called to Guy Park Avenue Tuesday afternoon and found the cub, estimated to be no more than 30 pounds, up a tree, according to the police department.

A DEC biologist decided to leave the furry mammal alone in hopes it would leave on its own.

DEC Region 4 spokesman Rick Georgeson said in an e-mail this morning there's been no more reports of bear sightings.

"We believe the bear has moved on," Georgson said.

The bear's visit is one of several reported over the past month.

Three bears - an adult female and two cubs - were reportedly killed by vehicles Sept. 16 in Milton, Saratoga County.

A bear climbed up a tree and took a nap in Gloversville Sept. 2 before authorities sprayed it with water and it ran away.

The DEC estimates there are between 5,000 and 6,000 black bears in New York State.
