If McCarthy must hire a chief, go for the best

Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy shouldn't even be talking about hiring a replacement for retiring Police Chief Mark Chaires. The city can't afford a chief as well as a public safety commissioner, and as long as Wayne Bennett stays around in his capacity as the latter, the city doesn't need the former. Unfortunately, McCarthy seems to want both; and even worse, he seems determined not to pick anyone who isn't willing to live in the city. ...

Really....this merits and editorial...Schenectady...does not hire by qualified or residency...they hire by Party Affiliation....I think the Gazette editors are living in a fantasy world.....All hiring is done by Party Affiliation....this is not even mentioned in this opinion.

Residency requirements are no good, it causes the best of the best to go elsewhere. It does not matter where one lives, having a job in the city is "skin in the game" because nobody wants to loss their job or face pay cuts.
