Girls’ volleyball: Spartans net title

Jessica Dillon had six kills and 12 assists, and Lynsea Hensel collected three kills and four blocks to lead defending state Class A champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake past 2011 state Class AA runner-up Baldwinsville, 25-22, 25-18, in the title match at the John Glenn Tournament.

Burnt Hills (18-1) defeated reigning state Class B champion John Glenn in the semifinals, 25-15, 21-25, 15-13, and beat Massapequa, 25-17, 25-11, in the quarterfinals.

Burnt Hills beat John Glenn in title match at its Harold VanEarden Tournament and sustained its only loss to John Glenn in the semifinals of its Cider Challenge Tournament, earlier this season.

Queensbury beat South Glens Falls in the semifinals, 25-11, 26-24, and then topped host Shenendehowa for the title, 19-25, 25-16, 16-14, at the fifth annual Columbus Day Conquest Tournament.

Brook Meader was named the most valuable player after collecting 69 assists and 12 aces throughout the tournament for Queensbury.

The tourney all-star team included Jenna Bureau of Queensbury, Taylor Murphy and Hayley Macken of Shenendehowa, Shannon Higgins of South Glens Falls and Katie Murphy of Cornwall.

Shenendehowa beat Cornwall in the semifinals, 25-16, 25-14. Macken had eight kills and 15 assists in the title match, Murphy had six kills and three blocks, and Natsumi Takamori had 17 digs.
