— Broadway was today named one of 10 Great Streets for 2012 under the American Planning Association's Great Places in America program.

The APA singled out Broadway between Van Dam and East Congress streets for its 19th century architecture, building facade improvements, compatible new construction, revitalization efforts and diversity of uses.

APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planning and planners play in adding value to communities, including fostering economic growth and jobs.

"Our Broadway has long been recognized as one of the best venues nationally for its vibrancy and as an ultimate destination," said Mayor Scott T. Johnson. "We are grateful for this prestigious award that recognizes the unparalleled success from many years of a public-private partnership and city planning, now and for the future."

Since APA began Great Places in America in 2007, 60 neighborhoods, 60 streets and 50 public spaces have been designated.

The nine other APA 2012 Great Streets are: Duval Street, Key West, Fla.; Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Mo.; Main Street, Bozeman, Mont.; Fifth Avenue, New York City; Wall Street, Kingston, N.Y.; Shaker Boulevard, Cleveland, Shaker Heights and Beachwood, Ohio; Grant Street, Pittsburgh; Broad Street, Charleston, S.C.; and Gay Street, Knoxville, Tenn.
