Star Party slated Friday evening at Wilton Preserve
GANSEVOORT -- Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park, 80 Scout Road, has planned the following programs:
* "Animal Communication" will take place at 4 p.m. Friday at Camp Saratoga.
Participants will learn about how animals communicate without words. Meet by the Visitors Information Cabin at Parking Lot 1.
* The park will hold a joint program with the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers Inc., a "Star Party" at 8 p.m. Friday at Camp Saratoga. Rain date is 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19.
Telescopes will be available for learning about the different constellations in the night sky. Hot cocoa and refreshments will be available. Bring a blanket and dress for the weather.
Preregistration is required by Wednesday.
* The park and the Saratoga Springs Public Library will hold a nature walk through Congress Park at 11 a.m. Monday.

Bonsai Club sets tropical workshop
WEST CHARLTON -- The PFM Bonsai Club, 7 Western Ave., will hold a Tropical Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Participants will learn how to grow tropicals as indoor bonsai. There will be a variety of choices.

Fall foliage hike slated in Pine Bush
ALBANY -- The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, 195 New Karner Road, has scheduled the following programs:
* The "First Friday Fall Foliage" hike is planned from noon to 1 p.m. Friday.
Take a hike along the trails and observe the changing foliage and fall colors.
This program is free but registration is required.
* "Birds Take Flight" will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Observe the science team in action as they capture and band birds to help them learn where they migrate in the winter. The short observation period outside will be followed by an indoor hands-on presentation. Indoor program will take place rain or shine.
* "Mad Hatter Day" hike will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Participants are encouraged to wear a silly hat like the fictional character from "Alice in Wonderland" on this one-mile hike in the pine bush. Wear sturdy walking shoes, long pants and bring drinking water.
* Smokey Bear is planning to visit the pine bush from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
Smokey Bear will teach visitors about wildfire prevention. There will be fire equipment on hand for visitors to try out, a relay race for kids and Smokey goody bags for visitors to take home.
This event is free and open to all.

Federated Garden Club sets meeting
KINGSTON -- The Federated Garden Clubs of NYS, Third District will hold "Autumn in New York" on Oct. 18, at the Holiday Inn (exit 19, off the New York State Thruway to Washington Avenue).
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the business meeting, awards and election of new officers at 10 a.m., the luncheon at noon and the afternoon program at 1:15 p.m.
Andrew Koehn, director of Landscaping and Gardens at Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, will present "Let the Flowers do the Talking."
