— Students at Central Park K-8 had to be sent home without their coats Monday when a gun threat was made just before dismissal.

Someone wrote on a bathroom wall that there was a gun in a locker. School officials called police, who spent two hours searching the lockers. They determined there was no gun, school district spokeswoman Karen Corona said.

But since the threat wasn’t made until five minutes before dismissal, and police did not know how many hours it would take to search the large school, officials were left with a dilemma: let the children go to their lockers, and possibly retrieve a gun, or leave without coats.

“So they had to go home without jackets,” Corona said. “We know the parents are concerned and probably not happy when their children came home late and without any outerwear, but it was an emergency situation. Better safe than sorry.”

Students were dismissed in supervised groups. Officials posted a letter on the website apologizing to parents and explaining why children didn’t have their coats.
