Dutchwomen earn berth in finals

— Sophomore forward Kate Thompson scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Union College women’s basketball team to a 48-45 victory over SUNY-Farmingdale at the Woodcliffe Hotel and Spa Invitational at St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon.

The 1-1 Dutchwomen will play either St. John Fishser or John Jay in the championship game today at 2.

Shayla Madden contributed 15 points, and Britteny Kenney added 10 rebounds for Union.

Siohban Purvis topped Farmingdale with 16 points and nine rebounds.

SUNY-FARMINGDALE

ROCHESTER — Kent Coyne scored 16 points, and 14 players made the scoring column in the Yellowjackets’ win over the Fighting Tigers in the opening round of the Rochester Holiday Inn Airport Tournament.

Rochester (4-0) advanced to today’s championship round at 3. SUNY-Cobleskill plays in the consolation game at 1.

CLINTON — Hamilton used balanced scoring and a 41-29 edge on the boards to beat the Dutchmen in the opening round of the Hamilton Thanksgiving Tournament.

Union (1-1) plays Utica in the consolation game today at 1. Hamilton (2-1) meets NYU in the championship game at 3.

Greg Newton’s 19 points led four double-digit scorers for the Continentals.

Union was led by Keven Don-ohue’s 25 points. Evan Croll and Joe Mason chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
