— The weekend baseball bat beating of a 14-year-old boy has resulted in the arrest of one man and a search for others, police said.

Alexander J. Messina, 20, of 818 Crane St., is accused of hitting the boy in the side of the head with a bat just before 10 a.m. Sunday morning, according to police and court paperwork. Police have not released the boy’s name.

The attack took place in the area of Congress Street and Sixth Avenue.

The boy was sent to Albany Medical Center for treatment. He remained there Wednesday in a medically induced coma, police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken said.

Messina was arrested by city police detectives Tuesday evening and charged with first-degree assault and first-degree gang assault, both high-level felonies that could send Messina to prison for up to 25 years, if convicted.

The basis for the gang assault charge is the allegation that Messina attacked the boy while aided by two or more others, according to papers filed in court. McCracken declined to say how many others police are seeking.

The case is being investigated by the department’s youth aid bureau, McCracken said. The case went there because of the victim’s age. Robbery is not believed to have been a motive.

McCracken cited the work and the quick arrest. “The detectives did an outstanding job.”

Messina was also charged with two misdemeanors, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. The weapons count refers to the baseball bat.

He was arraigned Wednesday morning in City Court and ordered held on $25,000 bail.
