Albany County police to enforce handicapped parking on Black Friday
ALBANY COUNTY Better think twice before illegally parking in a handicap space on Black Friday.
Albany County law enforcement agencies will be keeping a keen eye on area parking lots to ensure able-bodied shoppers aren't using handicap spaces at malls and shopping plazas. The coordinated effort, starting at 7 a.m. Friday and ending at 10 p.m., is part of an ongoing effort to ensure people with disabilities aren't unjustly locked out of parking spots on the busiest retail day of the year.
Since being established by the Albany County Traffic Safety Board in 1994, the effort, dubbed Project Access, has resulted in more than 2,300 citations. Those tickets have levied $278,520 in fines, according to county figures.
County officials are expected to announce the results of the effort Monday.
