Hotel stay offered for stranded troops
ALBANY As one of the busiest travel periods of the year approaches, free hotel rooms are available to military personnel stranded at Albany International Airport.
The Stranded Soldier Program began in 2010 as a partnership between the BBL Family of Companies and the Albany County Airport Authority. Since its inception, the program has provided 85 complimentary room nights at Albany and Troy Hilton Garden Inn locations to active military personnel.
John J. McKenna III, director of the Capt. John J. McKenna IV Military Courtesy Room, a place for military personnel to relax at the airport, said providing this room takes away one element of stress. The room is named after his son, who was killed in Iraq.
“When stranded military personnel realize that a comfortable room awaits them and they will not have to sleep on the floor or a chair in the airport, one can almost hear that sigh of relief, see a broad smile as they understand that the people in the Capital Region truly care about them,” he said.
A stranded soldier can approach authorized Military Room personnel to arrange for the complimentary accommodations and the Military Room staff will confirm a ride with BBL to their selected Hilton Garden Inn.
