Siena basketball: Saints Dee-moralized by Toreros' guard

— Siena’s good defense wasn’t so good for a change, especially against 6-foot sophomore guard Johnny Dee.

Dee made four of six three-pointers and all nine of his free throws, and scored 27 points as San Diego defeated Siena, 77-60, in the NUCDF Basketball Challenge on Sunday.

The Saints jumped to a 10-3 lead in the opening minutes, then spent most of the rest of the game failing to catch up to San Diego, as Dee scored 17 points in the first half.

The closest Siena (2-3) got in the second half was 52-46 with 14 minutes to play, but the Toreros (3-2) kept making shots, and the Saints’ offense didn’t have enough to keep up.

Siena senior forward O.D. Anosike recorded his fifth double-double in five games, with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Rob Poole made an impact after missing the end of Siena’s win over Northern Kentucky because of light-headedness, scoring 13 points.

Nobody in the Saints’ lineup had an answer for Dee, though, as he scored 15 points in the first 11 minutes to help San Diego get a little bit of breathing room with a 22-16 lead.

The Toreros got up by 15 before Poole hit a three to cut it to 42-30 at halftime.

The Saints gave up 77 points after having averaged 55.8 points against for the first four games.

Trenity Burdine made a three to get the Saints within 67-58 with five minutes left, but Ken Rancifer, who scored 13 points, answered with a jumper, and the Toreros pulled away.

Poole finished with 12 points for the Saints.

A troubling development for Siena is that starting point guard Evan Hymes had 22 turnovers in three games at the NUCDF Tournament.
