— The Gloversville Police Department is now at full staff, having just hired the second female officer in its history and the first within the past 20 years.

Joining the department is Jillian Faville; her first day is today.

Chief Donald VanDeusen said Faville is “a good candidate and I believe she will fit in well with the quality of officers we have in the department.”

Faville is a recent graduate of the police academy. She had initially gone through the academy as a recruit with the Utica Police Department but was laid off with several weeks to go in her training. She then worked with the Dolgeville Police Department and completed her training with them. She worked full time with Dolgeville and part time with the Herkimer County Sheriff’s Office before being hired by Gloversville.

With her hiring, the Gloversville Police Department is at 30 officers. Her starting pay is $37,544.

VanDeusen said Faville applied for a job with the department and met Civil Service and police department requirements. He called her hiring a lateral transfer, since she came from a sister police agency.

VanDeusen said Faville’s gender was not a factor in her hiring, but having diversity on a police force is important. “Diversity is always something we are looking for. It benefits the department as a whole,” he said.

A female officer can perform some functions male officers cannot do, such as processing female suspects, but in the end, she will be expected to do the same job other officers are expected to do, VanDeusen said.

“I do not want this hiring to take anything away from the overall way I view the police department here. I view the department here as very good, and she is one part of a good department that we already have,” he said.

The last female police officer in Gloversville was Marjorie Jones, who served from 1982 until her retirement in 1994. She is now a sitting Mayfield town justice.
