— Rakeem Brookins’ return could not have come soon enough for Siena.

Out with an injury all of last year and suspended for the first three games this year, he hit two free throws to tie it and the game-winning baseline jumper as the Saints (2-2) escaped with a 56-52 victory over Northern Kentucky in the NUCDF Basketball Challenge on Saturday night.

Evan Hymes scored 22 points for Siena, and Brookins scored 13, making up for another woeful night from the free throw line for his teammates by hitting two big ones to tie it at 52-52 with 38 seconds left.

Trenity Burdine, also injured all of last year and suspended for three games this year, forced a turnover on NKU’s ensuing possession, leading to Brookins’ jumper.

The game ended in bizarre fashion, as Eshaunte Jones (18 points) made a 30-footer, but was fouled first. NKU coach Dave Bezold drew a technical foul, and Hymes made the free throws with 1.2 seconds left.

O.D. Anosike had 11 points and 12 rebounds, his fourth double-double in four games.

The Saints face San Diego at 4 p.m. today.
