— Cal State Northridge made five of six free throws in the final 29 seconds to hold off Siena, 68-64, in the NUCDF Basketball Challenge at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday night.

Senior forward O.D. Anosike had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints (1-2), and Rob Poole scored a single-game career-high 19 points, making five of 10 three-pointers, but Siena was hurt by 11 turnovers by point guard Evan Hymes.

Stephan Hicks scored 20 points for Cal State Northridge (4-0), and Stephen Maxwell scored 19.

Josh Greene was just 2-for-11, including 1-for-8 from three-point range, but his one made three-pointer was a big one, giving the Matadors the lead for good, 60-58, with 1:45 left.

Hicks made a jumper to give Cal State Northridge a 63-58 lead with 1:18 left, then Hymes answered with a layup nine seconds later.

Poole made two free throws to bring Siena within 64-62 with 21 seconds left.

Freshman Ryan Oliver fouled Greene, and he made two free throws, followed by a layup by Poole to make it 66-64 with eight seconds left.

Forced to foul, Siena sent Greene to the line with six seconds left, and he made both as CNU finished the game 21-for-28 from the line.

Siena head coach Mitch Buonaguro was looking for better shooting from three-point range, and got it, as the Saints were 9-for-19.

The Saints were a combined 9-for-43 (.209) in their first two games.

The Saints trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but got within 34-31 at halftime, then Anosike, who has a double-double in all three games so far, got hot.

He scored Siena’s first 15 points of the second half as his team took a 46-45 lead with 10:59 left.

The second half featured 11 lead changes and five ties.

Hymes finished with 14 points.

Cal State Northridge freshman Landon Drew, son of Atlanta Hawks head coach Larry Drew and brother of UCLA guard Larry Drew II, scored six points in 21 minutes.

The Saints play Northern Kentucky in the NUCDF at 10:30 tonight.

Siena regains the services of red-shirt sophomores Rakeem Brookins and Trenity Burdine, who missed all of last season with injuries and the first three games of this season due to suspensions for violating athletic department policies.
