— University at Albany barely kept its Northeast Conference championship hopes alive by holding off Duquesne, 38-31, Saturday.

Sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi passed for one touchdown and ran for a second to help the Danes open up a 35-7 halftime lead. But the Dukes stormed back behind quarterback Sean Patterson to score three touchdowns in the second half.

The Great Danes (8-2 overall, 6-1 in the NEC) scored four touchdowns in the second quarter.

They need to defeat Central Connecticut State Saturday at University Field and then hope that Wagner loses to Duquesne in order to repeat as NEC champions and earn a second consecutive berth into the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Patterson passed for two touchdowns, a 22-yarder to Gianni Carter early in the third quarter and a 10-yarder to Sean Brady late in the fourth. In between, Patterson rushed for a four-yard touchdown himself. But Brady’s touchdown catch came with just 11 seconds left. Too little, too late.
