— Kina Zhou set an individual record and helped a Niskayuna relay group establish another as part of the Silver Warriors’ championship performance Saturday at the Section II Division 1 meet at Shenendehowa High School.

Zhou was a four-event winner and was selected the meet’s outstanding competitor, and Niskayuna scored 470 points to win its second large-school title in three years. Shenendehowa, the 2011 team champ, took second with 450 points.

Zhou placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.10, and the Yale University-bound standout later clocked a Section II-record 50.18 in winning the 100 freestyle. She broke the longest standing Section II record of 50.53 that Richelle Depold swam back in 1989.

Zhou set the Section II 500 free mark (4:56.94) earlier this season, and set the Section II 200 free record (1:50.24) as a sophomore.

“The first race wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be,” Zhou said of her 200 IM effort. “I was happy about winning because it was for the team, but I wanted a faster time. While I was warming down I was thinking I could let it get to me, or I could use it as motivation.”

Zhou earned automatic All-American status with her 100 free performance. She is the two-time state champion in the event, and said she will likely compete in that event again at the New York finals in two weeks at Ithaca College. She has options, though, having clocked state qualifying times this season in every individual event.

“She’s great. She’s not only points, she’s a leader,” Niskayuna coach Steve Hall said of Zhou. “The younger girls look up to her and learn from her. She helps the younger girls become Niskayuna swimmers.”

Junior Tacia Angelopoulos was Niskayuna’s other invididual event winner in the 100 butterfly (59.62), while Zhou, senior Grace Mat-uszyk, freshman Anna Vitolins and 11th-grader Mikayla Frodey joined for a Section II-record 1:37.51 in the 200 free relay. Shenendehowa had the record, going 1:37.96 at last year’s sectionals.

Zhou, Frodey, Angelopoulos and Matuszyk joined for a triumphant 3:33.74 in the 400 free to cap the meet. Niskayuna moved up a notch in the team standings after last year’s runner-up showing.

“They were awesome. It was a total team. Everything went according to plan,” said Hall. “This is what we were going for. We set a goal at the beginning of the season, and it’s nice when it comes into play like that.”

Niskayuna’s only dual meet defeat came against Shenendehowa, 107-79. That was part of a perfect regular season for the Lady Plainsmen.

“From the beginning of the season, all we talked about was winning the sectionals,” said Zhou. “When we had a hard practice, we said, ‘Think about the sectionals.’ All of our hard work paid off.”

Niskayuna got seconds from Angelopoulos in the 200 free (1:56.62), Froday in the 500 free (5:14.22) and Rachel Wurth in the 100 backstroke (57.97). Wurth, Vitolins, Angel-opoulos and Catherine Kaucic produced another runner-up effort in the 200 medley relay (1:49.25).

Shenendehowa sophomore Emma Ruper won the 200 free (1:55.11) and the 100 breast (1:06.49), Lady Plainsmen freshman Tara Killane copped the 500 free (5:12.95), and ninth-grader Julia Samson won the 100 back (57.28) and coupled with senior Bridget Geary and sophomores Susie Schwarz and Jennifer Lucius in a first-place 200 medley relay (1:48.19).

Guilderland/Voorheesville sophomore Kelly Gao won the 50 free (24.38), and Saratoga Springs senior Caroline Conboy won the 100 breast (1:05.89) and anchored the Blue Streaks’ runner-up 400 free relay that made the state team.

Behind seniors Sara Swett and Christy Brown, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake claimed its seventh consec-utive Division 2 team title with 397 points earlier Saturday.

Swett defended her 200 free (1:55.11) and 500 free (5:10.00) titles and helped the Spartans take the 200 free relay (1:41.50) and 400 free relay (3:45.23). Brown won the 50 free (25.49) and swams legs on the 200 free relay and on a victorious 200 medley relay (1:54.31).
