Pitching paces Colonie, 5-1

Ben Contento and Nick Powers combined on a one-hitter Thursday, helping Colonie beat Bishop Maginn, 5-1, in a non-league baseball game.

Contento worked the first five innings, giving up the Bishop Maginn run. Dave Monin led the offense for the 1-1 Garnet Raiders with a double and triple.

Ryland Van Praag went 3-for-4, and Mac Anderson drove in two runs, as Hoosic Valley beat Wat­ervliet, 4-1, in another non-league game.

Smith leads Shaker

Lauren Smith scored four goals, and Maddie Devine added three, as Shaker beat Shenendehowa, 9-2, in a Suburban Council opener.

Anne Morrison made 11 saves for the Blue Bison.

Haley Childrose had four goals to lead Columbia past Colonie, 11-8, in another SC opener.

Kim Carr had seven of Colonie’s goals.

Wrestling

Gilmore-Vanhoesen in semis

Columbia’s El-Shaddai Gilmore-VanHoesen advanced to the semifinals at 285 in the Junior division at the National High School Coaches Association tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.

Gilmore-VanHoesen, a state high school runner-up, opened the event with a pin, then beat David Moore of North Carolina, 3-0, and Jonah Auriello of Rhode Island, 3-2. He gets Travis Gusan of Ohio in the semis.

Another Columbia wrestler, Section II champ Angelo Kress, was alive in the wrestlebacks at 152 pounds in the Sophomore tourn­ament, as was Queensbury’s Franky Nassivera at 160.

Two more Columbia wrestlers, Evan Wallace and Brian Adriance, begin competition in the Senior division today.
