Amsterdam sailor’s rescue told in book

A gripping account of the rescue of Amsterdam sailor Donato Persico is found in a 1940 book called “Blow All Ballast: the Story of the Squalus” by Nat A. Burrows. Burrows was allowed on board the rescue ship “Falcon,” which sent divers down to the stricken submarine. The sub sank during practice dives off Portsmouth, N.H., on May 23, 1939.
