UPDATE: Amsterdam boy, 4, drowns at Sacandaga Lake
Updated 1:05 p.m.
SACANDAGA LAKE Authorities are investigating a drowning on Sunday of a 4-year-old Amsterdam boy at the Northampton Beach Campground on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira said state police responded to a call at the state-owned campgrounds about the drowning at 5 p.m. She said state police and the Department Environment Conservation are investigating the incident.
Police say the child and others had been swimming in an unauthorized area. After a search, his body was found in the water.
Lifeguards immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which was continued in an ambulance on the way to a hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Sira said the parents of the child were not at the campground. Authorities are not releasing names of the victim or the caregiver.
The state police and DEC brought the district attorney's office into the investigation to ensure "all legal requirements are being meet," Sira said. "The death of a 4-year-old is serious."
Sira said an autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.
