College Notebook: UAlbany's McElroy enters Hall of Fame
University at Albany athletic director Lee McElroy was inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame recently at the 47th annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Convention at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.
McElroy, who is in his 12th year as UAlbany’s vice president and director of athletics, is in charge of 19 intercollegiate programs. He was the NACDA’s president in 2006-07 and was recognized as the Under Armour Division I Football Championship Subdivision Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year in 2010.
Also in 2010, McElroy was selected to the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association Board of Directors.
During his tenure, the Great Danes have won 50 conference championships and have made 19 NCAA appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s volleyball, baseball, women’s field hockey and men’s and women’s track. In 2004-05, UAlbany was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the America East Conference’s top athletic program.
McElroy, who played football for UCLA in the late 1960s, was previously the athletic director at American University. He was also the director of athletics at California State University Sacramento and worked at the University of Houston from 1981 to 1989 as assistant director of men’s and women’s sports.
u Sage College junior outfielder and pitcher Rachel Smith (Ichabod Crane) was named one of five Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year recently. She was named the 2012 Gator of the Year as the softball team’s MVP and was also named the Female Athlete of the Year. She set single-season records for home runs (nine) and runs scored (43) and also hit .363 with 12 doubles and 39 RBI.
u In other Sage College news, infielder Kristen Beikirch was named the ECAC Division III Metro Softball Rookie of the Year, while pitcher/outfielder Kelsey Newberg was selected as an all-star utility player. Beikirch, a second baseman, hit .434 and drove in 31 runs, while Newberg posted a 16-9 record to go along with a .306 batting average.
u Union College named senior forward Kevin Donohue, senior guard Joe Mason and senior guard Matt Petrone as its tri-captains in basketball for the 2012-13 season. Donohue was a Liberty League second-team all-star after leading the league in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and scoring 15.2 points per game. Mason was also a second-team all-star and averaged 5.3 assists along with 11.5 points per game. Petrone played in 23 games and averaged 2.6 ppg.
u Current Siena junior lacrosse player Colin Clive led England past former Saint standout Matt Walsh (Class of 2006) and Ireland, 15-5, to capture the 2012 European Lacrosse Championship in Amsterdam.
