Schenectady district to hear proposal to consolidate two middle schools, sell Oneida building
SCHENECTADY Superintendent John Yagielski will reveal a proposal tonight to consolidate Schenectady’s two middle schools into one building.
The proposal is to make Mont Pleasant the only middle school. Oneida could be closed and possibly sold to Ellis Hospital. The hospital parking garage is across the street from the school.
School board President Cathy Lewis declined to give specifics, but confirmed that Yagielski will discuss the idea with the board at tonight’s meeting.
“In general, the situation is this: We’re under very tight budgetary constraints,” Lewis said. “I think that things will happen, for all school boards and school districts, at a faster speed than might have been desirable or even possible in the past.”
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Van Corlaer Elementary School, 2300 Guilderland Ave.

Time for parents and residents to organize and stop this nonsense now!
1:16 p.m.
what about the children who live far away? why should they have to be bused all away across town.
2:29 p.m.
One middle school isn't enough for Schenectady. Neither is one high school. The high school was overcrowded when I was there 10 years ago... now there's 900 more kids there.
3:13 p.m.
Let's not even consider it - let's just keep raising taxes every year. Pretty soon, the taxes will be so high anyone who can afford them will have moved away. Then we can just close the schools completely. It's not like we're talking about busing the kids across the state, it's only a few miles for most of them.
3:33 p.m.
add more k-8 buildings and get rid of all the middle schools -The ones they have now seem to be working well...
5:03 p.m.
So, we're going to close a middle school and perhaps sell the building BUT we're leasing buildings for elementary school kids!!!!!!! what's wrong with this picture?
12:09 a.m.
It is time once again for residents north of Union St to have schools (Elementary, Middle and High)that allow kids from similar backgrounds and neighborhoods to grow up together. The centralization of schools has had an adverse effect on property values, rentals and quality of life in the North End.
8:07 p.m.
Go to all neighborhood K-8. Close all 3 middle schools and make Mt Pleasant a high school again. This will eliminate the need for most busing, keep kids in the neighborhood and improve education. Agree with RDF- Mt Pleasant should be a high school focusing on industrial arts. Decentralize the schools and improve learning.
