In a night of lighthearted remarks and the occasional mistake, Schenectady’s new mayor and half of its City Council were sworn in Tuesday. Administering the oath to Mayor Gary McCarthy was the simplest part of the process, but even he had a surprise up his sleeve. He challenged the city residents to talk up Schenectady’s best traits in a deliberate effort to bring in more homeowners. “I believe it falls upon each of us,” he ...

They are not interested in cutting anything. Raises and hiring sprees are the order of the day. They need to cut the bloated budget by $7 million to lower taxes. Then they wonder why no one wants to move to the highest taxed community in the area.

People who visit cant be expected to live here if Schenectady is a graffiti and trash strewn city. I am a Democrat that supported the Democratic team AND voted for Riggi. Love his stand on quality of life. Clean the graffitti city wide AND maintain Central Park. Gets lots of visitors. It is a s__t hole. Crumbling stone bridges, trash that blows all, over broken windows in restroom buildings and graffiti all over the buildings. Pornographic graffitti on kids slides and other playground equipment.

Really not something the person in charge of parks should be proud off. Hopefully the new administration and council will hold people in charge accountable all the way around.

Gee, between Wmarinic and gina99, I am struggling to determine which of you is the more victimized, bitter, and most often off topic commenter. Here's a thought, if everything about Schenectady is so unfair and corrupt, MOVE!

@lanaturner
I move in two weeks to Colonie where my home is valued at three times the value of my home in Schenectady and the taxes are over $1000 less. I use to Chair the Vale neighborhood committee with Katherine Green, I also chaired a safety committee and started a youth group at the State St. Presb. Church. We payed to spay/neuter and placed dozens of stray cats a year out of our own pocket, we took kids from dozens of families to really expensive places like Jumpin Jacks and the park where most have never been with the hopes of them seeing a differerent way of living. I did all of this with the hopes of changing the attitudes in Schenectady, I don't want anything for it and I really dislike having to explain myself to you lanaturner. I put my time in and did more than you did I'm sure, so when you have done even half as much as me you can judge me, until then?. But there comes a time when enough is enough. Now if I can only sell my two family house here.
