State Wrestling: Champ Fusco leads Shen to team crown

— If Tony Fusco never wrestles another match, he’s OK with that.

Fusco, a standout running back on Shenendehowa’s state semifinal football team, capped a tremendous senior season by beating Reggie Williams of Johnson City, 11-3, Saturday night to win the

Division I 195-pound state wrestling championship.

“I knew this was going to be my last match, and I wanted to win it,” said Fusco, who ended up 36-0 this season and 181-32 for a career that began at Queensbury. “I’m not

going to wrestle in college, so I knew this was it.”

Fusco had beaten Williams twice previously this season, and used that experience to compensate for a bad right knee that had bothered him most of the season.

“It was bothering me,” said Fusco of the injury. “I know he likes to throw, so I knew I had to stay away from that.”

Fusco’s win, along with third-place finishes from three teammates, helped the Plainsmen win the individual team title for the third straight year.

Columbia senior El Shaddai Gilmore-VanHoesen was Section II’s only other DI finalist.

Whitehall senior Zach Diekel was the only other Section II wrestler to win a title, wrapping up his 195 DII title moments before Fusco as they competed on adjacent mats.

Duanesburg’s Curt Rowley (132), Hudson Falls senior Aaron Dudley (160) and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Alex Soutiere (285) also got to the DII finals.

“I’ve got another year, but I really would have liked to win this year,” said Gilmoe-VanHoesen, who has dealt with an ankle injury for the past month. “Things just didn’t go my way.”

Rowley was trying to become Joe Bena’s sixth DII state champion. But the seventh-seeded senior fell behind Section IV champ Connor Lapresi of Lansing, 5-0, in the second period before losing, 6-3.

Rowley, who knocked out the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinals, finished with 193 career wins.

“I had a great weekend, right up until the final,” said Rowley. “What hurt me was giving up that first takedown. That’s hard to recover from.”

Senior Aaron Dudley missed giving Hudson Falls its second champion in as many years, falling to three-time champ and DII tourney MOW Chris Nevinger of Section V Letchworth, 8-3. Dudley closed his career with 243 wins.

Diekel cleared a big hurdle en route to his fourth top-six finish with a semifinal win over Section III’s Austyn Hayes, avenging a loss in the semifinals of the Eastern States Classic. The Lehigh-bound senior went 39-4 this season (234 career wins) and joined his father Paul, who won in 1981, as a state champion.

Soutiere capped a strong postseason run by getting to the DII 285 finals.

“His last six matches [prior to the final], he really wrestled great,” said Indians coach Henry Mormile.

Three of Fusco’s teammates did a great job of refocusing, as 11th-graders Nick Kelley (132) and

David Almaviva (138) and senior Cole Lampman (285) all placed third. Kelley and Lampman recovered after tough semifinal losses. Almaviva won five straight bouts after a first-round loss on Friday.

“I’m not happy, because I came here to win a state title,” said Kelley, who dropped an 8-7 semifinal to eventual champion Jamel Hudson of St. Anthony’s. “You can’t hang your head.”

Kelley finished the season 45-1, and will take 205 career wins into his sixth and final varsity season after five trips to the states.

“I had done that before, not wrestled well after losing a match and knowing I couldn’t be a state champion. That’s the biggest thing I’ve learned coming to the state tournament.”

Almaviva took the same approach after a first-round loss.

“You just have to prepare for the next match,” said Almaviva, who didn’t place last season. “You can’t think about what happened in the last match. It’s just staying mentally focused.”

Lampman fell to Suburban Council rival Gilmore-VanHoesen, 4-2, in the semis, reversing the outcome of a meeting during the regular season. The Princeton-bound 12th-grader made sure he would get his hand raised in victory in his last varsity match, a 3-1 win over top-seeded Ethan Stanley of Saugerties.

“I took fifth here last year, so anything better is amazing,” said Lampman, whose final varsity win went a long way toward helping Shenendehowa clinch a third consecutive team title here. “It was my goal to make it to the finals, but this is the next best thing, right?”

Amsterdam sophomore Brandon Lapi took fourth at 113 pounds, the second straight year he reached the podium. He reached the semifinals both times, finishing third in 2011.

Columbia senior Evan Wallace placed third at 145, ending the season 51-1 and closing his six-year varsity career with 214 wins.

Returning state champion Connor Sutton of LaSalle was sixth at 160. He and South Glens Falls senior Stephen Lumley (170) both forfeited their fifth-place matches.

The other top DII finishes went to Salem junior Tyler Morris (fourth, 182) and the Hoosick Falls duo of Luis Weierbach (fifth, 99) and Brad Burns (sixth, 170).
