WPYX only station to broadcast Sandy concert
CAPITAL REGION The rock show “121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief” will be heard on only one broadcast radio station in the Capital Region — Clear Channel’s WPYX (106.5-FM).
The Wednesday-night concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City will feature musicians such as Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton and Billy Joel. It will be seen on television networks such as CBS, VH1 Classic and HBO. It also will be streamed on websites including Yahoo, YouTube, AOL, Vevo, Hulu and MTV Networks.
John Cooper, operations manager for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s cluster of Albany radio stations, said the program will begin at 7:15 p.m. The first set will begin at 7:30. He said the music also will be available on Clear Channel stations’ Web pages. The show is supposed to run until midnight, but Cooper said it could go longer.
“I think this is going to be one of the biggest,” Cooper said, recalling past benefit concerts. “There are a lot of people in need and as we’ve seen with these before, they can raise a lot of money. It’s going to be heard across the country and across the world. You’re going to be able to see it on television on a variety of cable channels, so the exposure will be out there. It’s up to the people to donate what they can.”
Part of the fun listening and watching, Cooper said, will be the surprises. “Who knows who’s going to play with whom?” he asked.
