Amsterdam putting on its holiday best
Celebrations set to be held at library, on Main Street
AMSTERDAM The city of Amsterdam is inviting people to revel in the holiday season today with attractions including Santa Claus, crafts and fellowship for all ages.
Events at the Amsterdam Free Library running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be followed by the city’s 2nd Annual Winter Fest Main Street Mixer, starting at 4 p.m.
The Friends of the Amsterdam Free Library is hosting a festival at the library, where kids can write letters to Santa and treat themselves to some sweets. The group’s vice president, Thom Georgia, said a make-your-own hot cocoa bar and sweet treat station will satisfy any sweet tooth before Santa stops by at noon to pick up cards from the children.
The event will also give the new group of library advocates a chance to share their goals with the community and drum up support and membership.
“We have our support base, but like any nonprofit in the current economic struggle, we need to make more friends and expand that base,” Georgia said.
The group hosted the first part of its FaLaLa Library Fest on Thursday, and youths have already drafted a bundle of letters for Santa. But there’s plenty of room for more, he said.
“It’s a family-centered holiday event to get new faces and energy here at the library,” Georgia said.
Mayor Ann Thane said food vendors were added to this year’s Winter Fest Main Street Mixer. She said the event should give a boost to downtown merchants and help bring residents and guests closer to the heart of the city.
“It’s a nice time,” Thane said.
Vendors will also be on hand with a variety of gift ideas for those interested in doing a little shopping. Stalls with gift ideas and other items for purchase will be situated inside the United Way building on Main Street.
The Main Street Mixer will continue until dark, putting guests in the city at a prime time to check out two major holiday light shows taking place, as well, Thane said.
Not far from downtown, the Century Club’s 21st Annual Festival of Trees is taking place at 130 Guy Park Ave. The Amsterdam Marching Rams’ annual holiday lights display is open from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 154 Brookside Ave., and the Kristy Pollak Memorial Christmas Lights show to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation is open from 5 to 10 p.m. on Lyon Street.
“People might want to come and spend an hour downtown and drive to the light shows up on the hill,” Thane said.
The FaLaLa Library Fest will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 28 Church St. The Winter Fest Main Street Mixer will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Main Street between Market and Church streets.
