— A press conference is scheduled for this morning at the Capital Region Maritime Center to announce the creation of a new private middle school in the region.

The school, the Saratoga Academy for Leadership and Maritime Programs at the Capital Region Maritime Center, will be a collaboration between the Saratoga Academy for the Arts and Sciences and the Capital Region Maritime Center, according to a press release about this morning's announcement. Plans call for the school to open in September of 2013 and serve students in grades 5–8 from throughout the Capital Region.

The school would also serve as a resource to teach young people about the Erie Canal system, spur new ideas for marine technologies and business development, and create additional opportunities for other local programs, according to the release.
