Girls' basketball: Griffins down Patriots

Courtney Lane scored 16 points, and Shiann Coons added 15 as Bishop Maginn beat Schenectady, 47-38, Friday in the Big 10 girls’ basketball opener for both.

The Lady Patriots had a 15-10 lead after one quarter in the debut of head coach Kathleen Wylie, but the Lady Griffins took control by outscoring Schenectady, 18-7, in the third period.

Cassie Semerad led Schenec­tady with 15 points. Caylee Semerad added 13.

Kiana Patterson scored 16 points as Troy overwhelmed Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 89-18, in another Big 10 opener. Talya Williams and Paris Jarrell combined for all the of the Bishop Gibbons points.

Monica Derby scored 10 points and took down 14 rebounds, and Taylor Wetsky was good for 12 points and nine rebounds as Fonda-Fultonville beat Galway, 57-29, in the first round of the Canajoharie tournament.

Cassandra Egelston added nine points, six steals and five assists for the Lady Braves. Erica Chase led Galway with eight points.

The hosts also advanced to the title game, using balanced scoring to beat Dolgeville, 51-29.

Alexis Kane led the Lady Coug­ars with 10 points. Dainera Veeder added nine points, and both Laur­en Balfe and Kara Schwab finished with eight.

Courtney Cirillo scored 14 points, and Johnstown held Stillwater to four baskets in beating the Lady Warriors, 53-26, in a non-leaguer.

Kelsi Barnholt added 11 points for the Lady Bills. Liz Zehner led Stillwater with eight points.

Bri Plummer had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Emily Petruccione also scored 15 points as Saratoga Springs beat Hudson Falls, 55-47, in its season opener.

Ellie Gonyeau and Caleigh Batchelder combined for 21 points for Hudson Falls.

Faith Welch beat the buzzer with the winning basket as Catholic Central edged Hoosic Valley, 38-37.

Alliyah Gillespie led the Lady Crusaders with 17 points. Cassidy Chapko hit for 24 points for the Lady Indians.

Emily Gaige scored 20 points, and Hannah Bowersox backed her with 13 as Schoharie defeated Margaertville, 61-28.

Renee Handy scored 15 points, all on three-pointers, in Sharon Springs’ season-opening loss to Worcester.

Jill Davis scored 12 points, and Nikaria Carota added 10 as Queensbury defeated Ogdensburg Free Academy, 50-37.

Briana Matazinsky fired in 26 points as Tamarac topped Mekeel Christian School, 59-50.

Jenna Erickson added 15 points for Tamarac. Macie Holmes led the Lady Lions with 18 points. Nicole Pigliavento and Emily Taplin teamed for another 11 points.

McKennalee Gordon scored 11 points as Albany Leadership School knocked off Lansingburgh, 43-29, Freshman Jess Patregnani led Lansingburgh with nine points.

Carly Brazil scored 19 points, and Abby Fountain chipped in 17 more as Waterford-Halfmoon beat New Lebanon, 67-24, in the Central Hudson Valley League.

Bella Nelson, Brianna Haughton, Lindsay Mannion and Elizabeth Briggs had a combined 42 points as Maple Hill rolled past Rensselaer, 57-20, in the Patroon Conference.
