Raising truck tolls on the state Thruway to the degree authority officials plan to Sept. 30 is a pretty bad idea. Trucks may cause the lion’s share of the wear and tear on the highway system’s roads and bridges, but they’re integral to the state’s economy in a way that private cars aren’t. So they’re worth subsidizing a bit. Sharply higher truck tolls will hurt not just truckers, but their customers — businesses large and ...

To complete this story the Gazette needs to tell the public who opposes the merger of DOT and Thruway. Isn't it primarily the public employee unions who will lose dues revenue when jobs are eliminated?

The Thruway system is an obsolete relic of the 60's & 70's and needs to be done away with, especially in Upstate & Western NY. I can't imagine its very cost effective to keep 24 hr staffing in places like Weedsport, Canastota, Little Falls, and Cairo, etc., compared to amount of tolls collected. Here in Capital District, Exits 23-25 serve more as a bottleneck and nuisance to efficient travel and transport than anything else. I say get rid of the Thruway from Harriman Northbound and Westward to PA line. Get more businesses to relocate to Upstate NY for lower transport costs and increase the tax base and jobs should follow. We can't afford to keep this dinosaur that was supposed to be gone 20+ years ago anyway.

I say PRIVATIZE the Thruway and get the cost (and inefficiencies) of operating it off our backs. Make those that use it pay for it, and make those that use it more pay more!

Privatization: a conservative cure to all that ails us!

F. The people who benefit from trucking should pay the cost of the damage trucks do to roads. Why in the world should grandma traveling to see grand kids, moms taking their kids to school and minimum wage workers going to their jobs subsidize trucking?
