Telling human side of fracking

Pa. residents will share experiences

— An academic lecture on the environmental impacts of hydrofracking can get a bit dry even for Center Sustainable Rural Communities director Bob Nied.

“We can bring in experts to list all the facts, and we have,” he said, “but everyone has already heard it, already read the articles.”

For the upcoming Fracked For Real event, set for Wednesday evening at the Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, the center plans to take a more human angle, bringing in a few regular folks from Pennsylvania who have experienced hydrofracking firsthand.

Schoharie County sits on the northern edge a field of Marcellus Shale, an underground rock formation currently proving very productive for gas drilling operations in Pennsylvania.

There is not yet the same level of interest in Schoharie as more southern locations, but with 4,000 acres already leased for drilling and a gas pipeline propsed to run through the county, Center organizers worry the fracking operations will move north.

Nied hopes a few personal testimonies will tip the scales in the local struggle between the growth of an industry that could prove an economic boon and the possible environmental risk of pumping millions of gallons of shale fracturing water and chemicals into the ground.

“People are making decisions about whether to allow hydrofracking,” he said. “The only way they’ll truly understand the issue is by hearing from people who live in it everyday, who can talk about how their lives changed.”

Vera Scroggins, one of the speakers, is pretty effective at painting an eerie picture of the industry. She described the hydrofracking wells near here Pennsylvania home as huge industrial islands reminiscent of alien colonies.

“The men scurrying around in their Hazmat suits, all the machinery,” she said. “From a distance, I feel like I’m watching an interplanetary invasion, something humans would never do on their own.”

She said just driving to the grocery has become a white-knuckle experience of dodging heavy cement and waste trucks cruising narrow country roads.

Even so, Scroggins considers herself lucky. She lives by a lake with the nearest gas well a half-mile away beyond a grove of trees. Her drinking water is still pure and the trees muffle the sound of machinery, but at night, she can see the flares of excess gas burning off.

“When I look up at the sky, It’s lit up bright orange,” she said. “I can see it pulsating with the flares.”

The other speakers, Carol French and Carolyn Knapp are dairy farmers who leased some of their land to the gas companies. Now French and her daughter say they’re dealing with rashes and illness from the chemicals.

Fracked For Real will take place Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Cobleskill-Richmondville High School auditorium. Admission is free.

Independent Oil and Gas Association officials could not be reached for comment on Center for Sustainable Rural Communities activities or the likelihood of large hydrofracking operations coming to Schoharie County.

The great problem with the Environmentalist Wacko movement is that all of this nonsense has been debunked by the several people in the movement itself. the issue that global warming is man made is a bunch of crap. This theory most notably from researchers like Roy Spencer who is a climatologist and a Principal Research Scientist for the University of Alabama in Huntsville, as well as the U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer(AMSR-E)on NASA’s Aqua satellite proves that this issue is bunk and cannot be proved by anyone. He has served as senior scientist for climate studies at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He is known for his satellite-based temperature monitoring work, for which he was awarded the American Meteorological Society's Special Award. Spencer suggests that global warming is mostly natural. He argues the climate is inherently stable to changes in radiative forcing from variations in natural drivers as well as humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions and aerosol pollution. He suggests that natural, chaotic variations in factors including low cloud cover may account for most observed warming. The second source to debunk the global warming theory are emails of environmentalist professors from the University of East Anglia in England which from the majority of them state that the global warming movement is a hoax and is nothing more than a power grab by the Leftist's of the world. The third way global warming is proved false is according to US Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) by his own research and positions on different committee's in the US Senate, especially from conducting interviews with former environmentalist's who once supported the man made global warming theory but have come to their senses from using their own words. Senator Inhofe, currently sits on the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works which is responsible for dealing with matters related to the environment and infrastructure, and in his book; The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future which was published in 2012.

Continuing on: In a speech, Sen. Inhofe, delivered on The Science of Climate Change, "The Catastrophic Global Warming Alarmist Not Based on Objective Science”, in Washington, D.C. Sen. Inhofe, delivered a comprehensive speech on the science of climate change, concluding that, based on the best, most objective science available, predictions of catastrophic global warming are baseless and should be rejected. The following are excerpts from the speech: “Much of the debate over global warming is predicated on fear, rather than science.”
“Today, even saying there is scientific disagreement over global warming is itself controversial. But anyone who pays even cursory attention to the issue understands that scientists vigorously disagree over whether human activities are responsible for global warming, or whether those activities will precipitate natural disasters.” “I would submit, furthermore, that not only is there a debate, but the debate is shifting away from those who subscribe to global warming alarmists. After studying the issue over the last several years, I believe that the balance of the evidence demonstrates that natural variability is the overwhelming factor influencing climate.” “I believe it is extremely important for the future of this country that the facts and the science get a fair hearing. Without proper knowledge and understanding, alarmists will scare the country into enacting its ultimate goal: making energy suppression, in the form of harmful mandatory restrictions on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse emissions, the official policy of the United States.” “I have offered compelling evidence that catastrophic global warming is a hoax. That conclusion is supported by the painstaking work of the nation's top climate scientists.” “What have scientists concluded? The Kyoto Protocol has no environmental benefits; natural variability, not fossil fuel emissions, is the overwhelming factor influencing climate change; satellite data, confirmed by NOAA balloon measurements, confirms that no meaningful warming has occurred over the last century; and climate models predicting dramatic temperature increases over the next 100 years are flawed and highly imperfect.”

Continuing on: Sen. Inhofe also stated that in the state of Oklahoma, the use of hydrofracking to explore for natural gas and oil deposits has never resulted in any accidents, the explorers have never reported any problems with this practice since it was started in the 1930's. Sen. Inhofe stated the ground water table is at about 1,000 feet (less than a quarter mile) below the earth's surface and the area where the hydrofracking drilling is done is at 35,000 feet (about 6 and 3/4's of a mile below the earth's surface) which is down to far if there was an accident it would not be able to reach the ground water levels which is the reason why the explorers go that deep below the earth's surface. So for the environmentalist wacko's to say that hydrofracking is an environmental danger they are full of crap and any evidence they present is another lame excuse not to believe these nit wits. This is just a power grab for these people. who want to see the human race thrown back to living like caveman once lived. For NYS to not move on these different job sites around NYS, this state is missing out on a way to turn their financial difficulties into monetary surpluses. If you folks don't believe me, I say do your own research to find out for yourselves.

Wow! You typed alot of stuff here pnotto. That sure makes me want to believe you. Fortunately I can read, and let me summarize what you've clearly worked so hard on:

You cite Roy Spencer, who also uses his Ph.D. to support "Intelligent design", a euphemism for the King James version of How We Got Here. 'nuff said about that.

You also cite Senator Inhofe who derives most of his campaign support from the energy sector. That makes him a "tool". No conflict of interest there, eh?

So essentially you've stood up two stooges as some kind of authorities on the subject. Not very impressive.

Maybe you would better help us understand your point if you spelled out why you hate science so much? Because that's really what you're saying here.

Well, Mr. ChuckD, my retort is obviously your blinded by a lap dog mentality and march in mind numbed robot lock step style through that of listening to whatever people from the environmentalist wacko movement like Al Gore and James Lovelock by having a controllable attitude in believing this hoax which is not uncommon for fools such as yourself. Much of it is hard to accept the fact the GAIA Hypothesis and theory about man made global warming doesn't apply here and has been proved false because man alone cannot destroy this complex planet. But since your to blind and foolish to read these articles I should know better to accept something like this which is way above your intelligence quotient level. If you would do as I said and do your own research of the articles and material that I have laid out and mentioned for you to follow you would see the truth. But that is impossible for Leftist's such as yourself because of your blind arrogance who believes that we were created by an unknown being. That is your right to believe that and this is not uncommon for people from the Left to believe in that is why you folks are considered foolish atheists. You see much to your unwillingness to accept the fact that ALL OF SCIENCE comes from and was created by God, most notably the Lord God of all creation who is Jesus Christ. If you would bother to open and actually read the bible and compare this book with the fact that all creation in your science field is from God and not by an unknown source or by man because we don't have the ability or the authority to create such as vast a domain that we live in. But for someone who is a pig headed moron who shines when your stupidity drivels out of your pie hole in even offering up this sort of nonsense you pass off as fact. For you Leftist's your pagan views can be in the following summation. All Leftist's believe that the earth is their creator, you Leftist's pray to an all powerful central government and your most holy sacrament is abortion and euthanasia. This is true hypocrisy and atheistic views from your side, Mr. ChuckD. Furthermore Mr. ChuckD I believe that Roy Spencer and James Inhofe are more expert on the issue of the environment than your so called fools who are Mr. Gore and Mr. Lovelock. By the way have you seen the size of Mr. Gore's home, which I believe is some 30,000 square feet and his monthly utility bill is around $3,000 a month. Still think Mr. Gore does what he preaches who also is given an Academy Award for a movie that has also proved to be a partisan film who was given this useless award by a bunch of hacks that are Leftist's in Hollywood and in the media. I think not you dim wit which is what people like you are for believing idiots like Albert Alan Gore, Jr., who by the way can also be listed as a tool for your false movement which is based around pure hypocrisy.

I couldn't care less about the 'Epistle to the Romans' written above in regards to Global Warming, which had really nothing to do with the substance of the editorial. What I do know with facts on official public record, is that real environmental damage has been systematically occurring in many areas of PA since it started allowing hydro-fracking. In March of last year a waste water trucking company in Greene County, PA was just indicted for illegally dumping several million gallons of waste water across several counties into ponds, streams, along roadways on rainy nights, down old mine shafts, etc, over last couple years. This company was just one of the ones who happened to get caught and the owner admitted guilt as well. How much more is this occurring all over PA because it's so expensive to haul & dispose of this waste water? There's lots of money to be made for sure in this gas business, but when these corners get cut to eke out a bit more profit, it affects thousands of people who now have tainted water sources because of unscrupulous contractors. If you have clean water now, good for you. Keep it that way.

First of all, Mr. biwemple, I have no idea what the hell you are referring to! I did not mention St. Paul's Epistle to the Roman's in my current posting about the hydro-fracking issue. It sounds like your having a bad LSD reaction moment from to many drugs you are ingesting which is obviously effecting the matter between your ears you refer to as a so called brain that you were never trained in how to use to come up with a rational thought to defend this silly argument that you try to offer up as fact. The issue of hydro-fracking has everything to do with man made global warming issues of this article because your lunatic environmentalist wacko movement has made it an issue by creating and trying to prove this issue with false and incorrect information. So the assertion that hydro-fracking causes man made global warming is on the table for debate and criticism of the ridiculous theories you nit wits come up with.
You offer up the fact that hydro-fracking causes ground water contamination through illegal dumping of the hydro-fracking waste water from the well sites into water sources such as lakes, streams, ponds, etc, etc, etc. This fact alone offers up the argument that you don't know what the hell you are talking about which is not uncommon because of dim wits such as yourself who displays this information as a valid argument but in actuality it has nothing to do with hydro-fracking. You are talking about a criminal activity that doesn't blame hydro-fracking in and of itself for ground water contamination. This again is another foolish assertion you supporters of the environmentalist wacko movement try to use as fact. If these people are caught doing an illegal dumping crime then they should have the book thrown at the guilty party for this alone doesn't support your lame argument. As I mentioned if your not to stupid to think on your own you actually might come to your senses like the other moron who posted on this site needs to do who is Mr. ChuckD.

The expression 'Epistle to the Romans' is often used to refer to long-winded people who can't get their point across in a few coherent sentences. When you add in the barrage of insults you throw around in your endless posts, you appear to be nothing more than a simple cyber-bully. I would hazard a guess from reading your rants of late that you come across as mentally unstable too. I have requested that your posts be flagged for removal already due to abuse and lack of civility. Keep your distance.

OK, I'll keep it short this time. If you could put together a coherent thought and read the English language you might be able to follow a grown up conversation, Mr. biwemple. If you folks on the left would be civil as well maybe we could have an honest dialogue, but that would be impossible because of the hostility toward anyone who challenges your moronic points of view from the Left. By the way you started the insults my friend, I am simply retorting your ridiculous points of view and show you your points of error, because your the one that can't defend them. In your post I merely counter pointed your assertion which you could not back up with a proper valid argument. This is a public forum, if you can't defend your position with valid facts and statistics then maybe you should think about not entering this realm.
