In the Military: Steindl to oversee flying operations at Stratton
GLENVILLE Lt. Col. Michael Steindl, analyst and staff officer to the director of the Air National Guard’s Action Group, has been promoted to operations group commander of the New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing at the Stratton Air National Guard Base.
In his new position, Steindl will oversee all flying operations at the 109th Airlift Wing, including the 139th Airlift Squadron, the 139th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and the Operations Support Flight.
Steindl will report to Col. Shawn Clouthier, commander of the 109th Airlift Wing.
“It’s certainly a thrill of a career to be able to be selected for a position of that magnitude. I’ll be serving more than 300 of the best people I’ve ever known. It’s certainly something I never dreamed that I would achieve in my career, so it’s a great honor,” Steindl said.
A resident of Greenwich and a 21-year veteran of the 109th Airlift Wing, Steindl has served in several capacities, including assistant chief of training, chief of tactics and wing executive officer.
He also served as the commander of the 139th Airlift Squadron. As the squadron’s commander, he routinely deployed with the unit’s C-130 and LC-130 aircraft to Greenland and Antarctica, a duty he will perform in his new position as well.
Steindl was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
He will assume his new role in September. A change of command ceremony will be held in late summer or early fall.
