School lacrosse: Spartans recover, rip Eagles in second half

Nick Vincent and Trevor Hiss combined for seven goals and 10 assists, and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys’ lacrosse team bounced back from its first loss with an 18-8 Suburban Council win over Beth­lehem Thursday.

The Spartans (3-1, 4-1) broke away from a halftime tie with a 12-2 second-half run two days after bowing to unbeaten and nationally ranked Niskayuna, 20-8.

Vincent collected five goals and four assists, and Hiss had two goals and a school-record six assists. Tom Kenneally added three goals and two assists, and the Spartans had 15 assists in all.

“Defensively, we made a couple of adjustments on what we wanted to do against [Liam] Christiansen and [John] Gosstola,” Burnt Hills coach Tom Schwan said of the second half. “We got our transition

going, and we did a good job of making the extra pass.”

Christiansen and Gosstola both had two goals and one assist in the first half and one goal in the third quarter. Bethlehem (3-0, 0-4) was outscored in the final period, 7-0.

Lucas Maloney collected seven goals and nine points, Luke Goldstock piled up five goals and eight points, and Niskayuna (4-0, 5-0) soared past Colonie, 19-3.

Matt Sexton had two goals and four assists for the Silver Warriors, and Virginia recruit Mike D’Amario scored his first two goals of the season after missing action with a concussion.

D.J. Edick scored four goals, Brian Rogers had two goals and two assists, and Shenendehowa (3-1, 3-1) rebounded in the second half for a 9-7 win over Guilderland.

Patrick Wood had three goals and an assist for the Dutchmen (2-1, 3-2).

Glens Falls (4-2) got a combined eight goals from Matt Parsons, Carl Sopczyk and Jake Dailey, and extended its win streak to three games by downing LaSalle, 10-6, in a non-league game.

Parsons topped the Indians with three goals and an assist. Brian Schneider and Connor Shanahan both had a hat trick and an assist for the Cadets (2-1).

Matt Balter scored three goals and assisted on two, and Albany Academy (3-0) beat Columbia in a non-league game, 7-5.

Troy beat Maple Hill behind Thomas Nealon’s four goals, Tyler Littlejohn’s three markers and Joel Braun’s four assists, 13-5. Kolby Randall had four goals for the Wildcats.

Ballston Spa beat Sidwell Friends of Washington, D.C., 7-2. Both Matt McDonald and Sam Groves had two goals for the Scotties (1-2), while John McDonald had a goal and three helpers. John Blake made 13 saves.

Girls

Erin Down, Kayla Treanor and Ritchie Assini produced three goals apiece, and Niskayuna (5-0, 5-0) eased past winless Colonie, 18-2, in a Suburban Council game.

Kelly Schlansker, Catherine Sexton, Jill Marci and Carrie Hanks notched two goals apiece for the defending Section II Class A champions, while Sexton had a team-best three assists. Schlansker and Treanor both had a pair of assists.

Lauren Smith had four goals and as many assists, and Shaker (5-0, 5-0) also remained clean with an 18-2 triumph at Averill Park.

Anne Rehfuss had four goals and five points for the Blue Bison, and Kait Cheney had one goal and four assists.

Gabby Childrose worked for four goals and an assist, Grace Maney and Sarah Jaromin both scored two goals, and Sam Gladd made five saves in Columbia’s 10-4 win over Ballston Spa.

Kassie Purcell scored two goals for the Scotties.
