Niskayuna takes down state champ Jamesville-DeWitt, 17-10
Niskayuna took a quick lead and never surrendered it Saturday in beating two-time defending state Class B lacrosse champion Jamesville-DeWitt, 17-10, in a boys’ non-league game.
The Silver Warriors scored the first two goals, led at the half, 7-4, and after three quarters, 11-7, before sealing it on game-ending goals by Aidan O’Brien, Matt Sexton and Luke Goldstock. For Goldstock, it was his 18th goal in three games.
“I though we’d be able to create offense. We were prepared for sure,” said Niskayuna coach Mike Vorgang. “One of the keys was we had to shoot well, and the kids did that.”
Niskayuna (3-0) ended Jamesville-DeWitt’s 46-game winning streak. Jamesville-DeWitt went 22-0 in winning each of the last two state titles.
“Obviously, when you play a team the caliber of Jamesville-DeWitt, and win, it’s great for your program,” said Vorgang. “They’ve got a kid going to Syracuse and another one going to Harvard, and I’m sure they’ve got a bunch of others who will be going to Division I schools.”
Jamesville-DeWitt (2-1) came in with a No. 5 ranking on the ESPN Fab 50 national poll. Niskayuna is ranked No. 26 on the poll.
“This shows we can play with some of the best teams in the country,” said Vorgang, whose Silver Warriors beat Shenendehowa, 15-10, and Ballston Spa, 15-6, before ending the Red Rams’ lengthy streak. “It’s a huge win. It shows we belong at that level.”
Goldstock finished with five goals and an assist, Sexton had three goals and an assist, Tanner MacIvor notched three goals and combined with Tyler Pantalone for 13 faceoff wins, and Evan Quinn made 13 saves. Jeff Edwards paced J-D with three goals and two assists.
Brothers win
Andy Curro, Noah Arciero and Torey Williams each collected three goals and an assist, and Christian Brothers Academy defeated Schenectady, 17-5, in Big 10 action.
John Bassett and Sean Behrmann both added a goal and two assists for the Brothers (2-0, 3-0). Kwame Jarvis had a hat trick for the Patriots (0-1, 0-4).
Andy Hooten and Chris West scored for Colonie in a 4-2 non-league loss to Rome Free Academy, and Johnstown bowed to Utica Proctor, 5-4, at Knox Field.
