'Hoodie rally' in memory of Trayvon Martin set for Thursday in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY The Schenectady County branch of the NAACP will hold a hoodie rally Thursday in honor of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
The rally, titled “Justice for Trayvon Martin,” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hulett and Albany streets, the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said.
Organizers donning hoodies took to the streets in Albany on March 25 to protest the shooting of Martin and the police’s failure to arrest his shooter, George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer.
Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Martin, who was unarmed and wearing a hoodie, after calling 911 and telling an operator the boy looked suspicious. The incident has caused a national uproar over what many say was racial discrimination and a lack of justice for the boy’s family.
Schenectady organizers will march to Jerry Burrell Park, at Hamilton and Schenectady streets in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood.
