From 1926 to 2011 — they’ve been in the “game” for 85 years. They do tricks, flips and jokes every show. They make you laugh no matter what. No one can top this team, which entertains its fans from the beginning to the end. This isn’t the Lakers, not Miami Heat, not Orlando Magic, but the one and only Harlem Globetrotters!
My first experience seeing the Globetrotters was amazing. I went on Feb. 27 with my mom, dad and some friends for my birthday, which was the day before. We got to the Times Union Center at least two minutes before the game started. The show was funny, exciting, enthusiastic and entertaining, all at the same time.
The players would do this small three-man weave; they would dunk almost every possession; they would sit on top of the basket and pants the other players and the referee. It was all just so funny, and if the referee felt they were goofing off too much they would be sent to the penalty box for about one minute.
There were about 10 members on the team, and they all had nicknames like Bull, Handles, Crush, Firefly, Rocket, Dizzy and their mascots were the best: Globie and Big G.
I’ll never forget those Globes.
To sum this up let’s just say before that show, I had no clue who the Harlem Globetrotters were.
There was this one player named Handles and I guess he was goof of the team. Every time he saw a camera he would burst out with “Ayeee ayeee!” It was so funny. After the show my friends and I kept going up to each other saying, “Ayeee ayeee!” laughing hysterically.
Another player named Firefly used to be a student at Siena College. I found it cool to see someone from where I live be a part of a sensation like the Globetrotters.
As we got more into the show there was this one act where Handles and Firefly were arguing over a cup of water. So as they were arguing Handles smacked the cup of water out of Firefly’s hand and the water goes all over the fans that were sitting in that row. It was so funny. Then Handles got a bucket of water and again as they were arguing Handles tried to throw the bucket of water on Firefly and missed, which led to the whole bucket of water getting on the fans on the other side of the stadium. Then Firefly ran over to the side we were sitting on and along came Handles right behind him with a bucket of “water.” Of course we all thought it was water, but once he flung that bucket we all flinched … but it was just feathers.
Some people say that the Globetrotters wouldn’t have a chance against any of the major teams in the NBA. A part of me agrees with their opinion and a part of me doesn’t, but at the end of the day the Globetrotters are doing what they do to entertain and show that basketball isn’t just about competition. The Globetrotters show that you can also have fun with basketball and your teammates many different ways, and they do a very good job showing that.
