The stalemate over gay marriage in the state Senate has rekindled the old debate about whether homosexuality is genetic or acquired, or maybe even perversely chosen. First up was a letter writer from Saratoga Springs who asserted: "It is a fact that a person who is attracted to the same sex is genetically predisposed." Next was a Bible-reader from Delanson who declared in a letter that appears in today's paper: "There is no study that ...

Birds and bees do not rationalize their mating instincts, nor do they choose to be stimulated by the opposite sex during mating season. From what I have observed of human behavior, we have no say in what stimulates us sexually. And while I agree that homosexuality is not "normal" human behavior, I conclude that discrimination because of this abnormality has no place in a country that proclaims to afford all, " Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Unlike you Mr. Strock, I do not enjoy the debate. Do people really believe anyone would choose to be gay in a world where they can expect to be ostracized and victimized in the name of someone's god?

I am more afraid of how religion is influencing our government when the two should remain separate entities.

As we also realize that Strock picks and chooses what studies support his anti-religious sentiments. The fact remains that there is NO gene that has been identified as causing homosexuality. No wants to grow up to be a substance abuser, pedophile, thief, gangster, so asking why would someone "choose it" is not a valid argument for supporting homosexuality as inherent. Animals certainly do engage in sexually arousing the opposite sex - just watch some old Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom episodes. A female domestic cat in heat repeatedly wiggles her hind quarters in front of the male to arouse him. What is considered sexually stimulating is certainly cultural. In western civilizations, breasts are consisered a turn on, but not so in other cultures, for example, many African cultures. Women do not cover their breasts and they are viewed as simply what nature intended them for.

The fact that a "gay" gene has not been isolated, does NOT mean it does not exist. How dare you compare the gay population to drug abusers, pedophiles, thieves and gangsters!

You are obviously in serious need of diversity training. It is statements like yours that promote hate and bigotry. Thankfully the State Legislature passed the Dignity for ALL Students Act that protects students and requires age appropriate education about sexual orientation, and gender identity. Hopefully that will be the cure for bigotry which is definitely LEARNED behavior.

Thank you so much for continuing to shine the light of reason and free-thinking on the dark lower depths of hypocrisy and ignorance. I read your column to my middle school children tonight. Unfortunately, it seems the battle will only get tougher. Witness Rick Perry's call to prayer and Michelle Bachmann's candidacy. These people want a theocracy so badly. Our Founding Fathers have got to be rolling over in their graves.

The only reason this passed is because the state is broke and how else to open up more courts and lawyers to make money with the state on the backs of taxpayers.....sad truth using emotions for purpose..nothing new...it is the downfalls of societies...money and greed and the dependence on such...

Well, Jerry, I suppose you also believe because a unicorn has not been found doesn't mean they don't exist. Really sick that people like you confuse what actually does exist with what you want to exist. The Human Genome Project was completed a few years ago - no "gay" gene. Researchers abandoned the idea a while ago - because there is NO credible evidence that such a gene exists - the failure to find find such a gene has led researchers, who are determined to find genetic proof, to look at combinations of genes as the possible cause - get with the times. Your statement is not only illogical, but frightening as well - others are subject to your hate speech merely for speaking the truth? The fact is that you don't know my opinion or feelings on homosexuality - what the state really needs to do is find a cure for people with ignorant behavior like yours - you want gay marriage - fine but don't speak untruths about the nature of the behavior.

Bumbi, If you were actually familiar with genetics you would know that we are at the earliest stages of dicovering linked traits. I was a participant in the Human Genome Project sponsored by National Geographic and at the time only 12 markers were being studied in paternal lineage. The study did not include mitochondrial DNA from maternal lines. The FACT is that I am living proof.

The Marriage Equality bill was passed because it was the right thing to do. 42 years after the NYC Stonewall riots where GLBT Americans finally said enough to discrimination and living as second class citizens, we are finally able to say we are equal in the eyes of the law regarding marriage.

Kudos to the NYS lawyers. More marriages means more divorces etc., etc.,etc. Now that everyone's attention has been diverted away from the real issue (taxes). let's get back to buisness of taking control of our lawmakers and thier spending.

Jerry, no matter how badly you want it, there simply is no gay gene. Those linked traits you refer to are a far cry from establishing homosexuality as genetically based. And the very FACT that researchers are now focusing on "linked traits" is because they have abandoned looking for a gay gene - it's is pretty much accepted that it doesn't exist. And those same researchers also acknowledge that even if those linked traits are someday proven to play a role homosexuality, in and of themselves, they wouldn't cause homosexuality, it's also a combination of hormones, environment, etc.
