— Some seven years after former Mayor Frank La Porta announced Walmart would build a new supercenter on South Kingsboro Avenue Extension, a groundbreaking date has been announced.

Walmart spokesman Bill Wertz said Wednesday the groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 3 at the site. Wertz has said construction will take about one year.

The starting date has some importance to the city because Mayor Dayton King and Finance Commissioner Bruce Van Genderen were counting on generating about $100,000 this year from sales tax on construction materials. That estimate was based on speculation that construction would begin in the spring.

With about five months left in 2011, Van Genderen said Wednesday, sales tax receipts might fall to the $50,000 to $60,000 range. He said the city is reaping some unexpected savings in other areas and will be able to absorb any sales tax shortfall.

Still, Van Genderen said, after all these years of waiting, “this is a significant event for the city.”
