— In the "Harry Potter" book and movie series, it gained fame as Hedwig, Harry's pet snowy owl.

Over the weekend, a similar snowy owl made an appearance in a Rotterdam neighborhood.

When Cerissa Contakos heard crows making a ruckus outside her home on First Avenue -- near the intersection of Hamburg Street and Chrisler Avenue -- she brought a camera along. Contakos captured these accompanying photos of the owl, perched in a tree high above the street. Several curious onlookers stopped by to catch a glimpse of the owl.

Contakos said the owl was spotted there at about 8 a.m. Saturday and remained for much of the day. It was gone by late afternoon.

The snowy owl is one of the largest and heaviest species of owl, measuring between 20 and 28 inches in length and 50 to 60 inches in wingspan. It is also known as an arctic owl or great white owl.
