Police: Drunken driver mistook county jail for Canadian border
Thursday, March 4, 2010

Text Size: A | A | A

— A New Hampshire man drove to the loading dock gate at the Montgomery County Jail on Tuesday and asked permission to enter Canada.

Deputies allege William F. Edmunds, 32, of Hudson, N.H., drove drunk from New Hampshire and parked outside the jail’s loading dock gate, where a sign directs visitors to wait for an officer.

When deputies arrived, Edmunds offered them a $20 bill and told them he wanted to cross the border into Canada, believing he was at a border checkpoint near Niagara Falls, according to Undersheriff Jeffrey Smith.

“He was extremely intoxicated,” Smith said.

Edmunds refused field sobriety tests, and Smith said deputies found alcoholic beverages in his vehicle. He was charged with felony-level DWI because of a prior conviction in New Hampshire; additionally, he faces a count of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, also a felony.

Edmunds was arraigned in Glen Town Court and sent back to the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

“It was very unusual,” Smith said. “This is the first time it’s ever happened before. I can’t believe someone looking for Canada would drive drunk to the sheriff’s office in Fultonville, N.Y.”
