Former Union College president to run for mayor
SCHENECTADY A new politician has entered the mayoral race.
Former Union College President Roger Hull, who has never run for political office before, will challenge Mayor Brian U. Stratton next year.
Hull announced his candidacy today, months ahead of the normal political schedule.
“One needs to run early and run hard if one’s to have a chance against such a machine,” he said, describing Stratton and his team of Democrats as having a stranglehold on Schenectady politics.
The Democrats have controlled the City Council for 34 years, though they have only gotten three of their candidates elected mayor in the last 55 years.
Hull said the Democrats are so assured of victory each year that they can treat residents poorly, spend unwisely and offer pension deals to their favorites.
“I don’t care which party it is, but one-party rule doesn’t benefit anyone but those in party,” Hull said.
