Man missing after boat capsizes
Nephew swims to shore; search of Mohawk to resume
MOHAWK The search continues today for a Gloversville man whose boat capsized in the Mohawk River near Lock 13 Saturday afternoon.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened after Rafael Montalvo, 47, of Gloversville was fishing with his 16-year-old nephew Jose Carlos Satin, of Galway.
When Montalvo and Satin got close to the lock, their aluminum fishing boat took on water and capsized, according to reports. Satin was able to make it to shore and up to Route 5 to seek help, after not being able to find his uncle. The youth was examined at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam and released.
Several emergency responders were called to the scene, including the town of Mohawk Volunteer Fire Department, Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department Dive and Rescue, Amsterdam Fire and Amsterdam Police Divers, and several state police units.
A search in the area around Lock 13 was held until Saturday nightfall. That search is scheduled to resume today, beginning at 8 a.m.
Montalvo is described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, 180 pounds, bald, with blue eyes. He was wearing blue jeans, a black tank top, and white sneakers at the time of the incident, deputies said.
Anyone with any information useful to the search is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center at 853-5500.
