Mall providing storefront for animals
Tuesday, September 8, 2009

— The Saratoga County Animal Shelter will be taking a permanent storefront at the Clifton Park Center mall where cats will be available for public adoption.

The county’s Public Safety Committee on Tuesday approved a proposed lease in which the animal shelter will be given a currently vacant interior storefront at no cost.

“We try to hold adoption clinics as often as we can. This just seemed like a natural extension,” said Jeff Townsend, marketing and promotion manager at the mall.

The timing of opening the storefront will depend on Board of Supervisors’ approval of the lease, which should come later this month.

Animal Shelter Director Dan Butler said the temporary cat adoption clinics held periodically at the Clifton Park and Wilton malls have been very successful, and having a permanent storefront is worth a try, since it won’t cost the county anything.

The storefront will have 10 to 12 cats at any given time, and will be staffed entirely by volunteers, Butler said. Someone will come in every morning to feed and care for the animals, and someone will be there in the evenings and on weekends to answer questions and handle adoption paperwork.

It’s also possible dogs available for adoption will be brought on weekends, though they won’t be kept there around the clock.

The public will be able to adopt a cat “that day, basically,” Butler said.

“I have about a half-dozen volunteers,” Butler said. “They really want to try this.”

The cats will stay in the storefront, eliminating the cost and stress on the animals of transportation between the animal shelter in Milton and the mall that is incurred when a temporary adoption clinic is held.

Clifton Park Supervisor Philip Barrett said the storefront can also be used to promote plans for the new county animal shelter and other animal-related activities.

The mall does not have a pet store. Townsend said the storefront will be along the corridor between the food court and the Boscov’s department store, and the lease will be for one year.
