This past fall, I joined the cross country team. I decided to join the cross country team because I love to play sports and run. In my first meet, it was BP vs. Queensbury vs. Glens Falls. Out of 76 kids, boys and girls, I finished 17th. My parents were amazed that I finished 17th out of 76. We finished second; we lost to Queensbury 24-42.
Now comes our second meet against Johnstown and Gloversville. We did really well at Gloversville’s course. We won in modified boys, varsity boys, and varsity girls.
Halfway into the season we went to Queensbury for a modified-only invitational. I finished 23rd and we came in fourth.
One day at practice, we went into the woods and ran up hills that were really steep. My legs were sore when I got up in the morning.
It came down to one of our biggest meets in the season. There were about 500 kids in modified boys and girls, 200 in JV boys and girls, and 250 varsity in boys and girls. I came in 103rd, but we won in varsity boys and girls and got trophies.
Before the championship meet, we had one more meet to run. We went against Hudson Falls and Ballston Spa. We won in every division accept for modified girls because we didn’t have enough runners.
Now comes the championships. We dominated in the first half of every division. In the second half, we slowed down a little. 95 percent of every division on our team finished in the top 20. I had a strong finish and boy was it rough. I was trying to block a kid from Queensbury at the final stretch and he tried pushing me out of the way so he could get by, but I pushed him and nearly tripped him. We came in second place in every division, and I came in 19th. We always lose to Queensbury, but I know we can beat them next year.
