The city will seek stimulus funding to demolish an antique firehouse and replace it, even though renovations would cost two-thirds less than rebuilding. The measure, proposed by fire Chief Robert Farstad, sparked a short debate at Monday’s City Council committees meeting. In the end it was approved by the committee on the grounds that it was better to spend “someone else’s money,” as Director of Operations Sharon Jordan put it. “To foot the bill for ...

As I look at what the various commissions in Schenectady County are doing I am appalled. It is a grand old city rich in history. Why not search for another location for a newer firestation and leave this building for renovation and preservation?

Once a historical building is destroyed you can never get it back.

A note to Sharon Jordan. "Free Money" isn't free. There is always a price. This time it is history.

If you want a modern suburbia I suggest you try another location to move to like Colonie.

Build a new, smaller fire station at a more commercial location-perhaps on Crane Street.
Remodel the station for residential use ,through a private buyer, and put it on the tax rolls.

With all the vacant housing in Mt Pleasant they want to knock down a historic fire station? Ya mean not doing #1? These idiots learned nothing from the re-assessment fiasco. Everyone must go.

Jordan/Stratton -What a team? Do you think Colonie would take her?

Watch your taxes go higher and higher.
Why not a county fire dept and a county PD.

I agree with FireThemAll....if they want to keep this building fine keep it but not as the functioning fire station. I have many close friends that are firemen in the City. I have heard stories and have visited this station many times. LEAD paint is pealing off the walls...NOT HEALTHY. Chemicals have been spilled and you can still smell fumes...NOT HEALTHY. There are rodents that like to call this station home....NOT HEALTHY-->think about yourself sleeping at night wondering if something if going to crawl up on you. The ceiling this passed winter collapsed directly above the kitchen prep area...would you like sheet rock for dinner..not even ketchup will makes sheet rock taste better. The ceilings in the bay also collapsed in 2 areas. The Bathrooms...MOLD...NOT HEALTHY. Officers room...2 of the 4 walls...MOLD and PEALING PAINT...NOT HEALTHY. If you speak to some of the fireman that have been on the job for several years...they will tell you that a good percentage of the retired guys that have worked at that station are now ill. These firefighters occupy this building 24/7 .. 365...they should not be expected to work in these types of conditions.
If you feel it's necessary to keep the building...do it for someone else. Give our firefighters that work so hard EVERYDAY to keep us safe AND ALIVE and protect our homes...a place that they can call their home away from home because that is what it is !!!!!
