— A supplier of hardware items such as keys, screws and identification numbers is closing its local distribution center.

The Hillman Group, which sells small parts to hardware stores, pet suppliers, mass merchants and other retail outlets, earlier this month told the state Department of Labor it will lay off 30 employees at its sole Northeast distribution arm on March 31

Facing a slowdown in orders, the Cincinnati-based company plans to shift the Green Island facility’s work to its new but “underutilized” distribution center in Cincinnati, said company President Rick Hillman.

“We’ve seen a slowdown,” Hillman said.

Only three years ago, Hillman relocated its Green Island distribution facility to a 56,000-square-foot building it leases on Cohoes Avenue, though it has operated in the area for about a decade. Around 2003, it built a 275,000-square-foot distribution center in Cincinnati. The Green Island operation is the only distribution center Hillman is closing.

The company’s products, which also includes engraving and key-making equipment, are sold in more than 21,000 retail locations worldwide.
