— A Sunday evening fire that may have started in a clothes dryer installed in the kitchen caused heavy damage to a Fox Street home.

City firefighters were called to the home of Donna Knapp just before 8 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived, fire was already engulfing a large part of the rear of the two-story building.

Fire Chief Douglas Edwards said Monday while a cause has not been determined, investigators are focusing on the dryer. He said the appliance was vented to the interior, and lint and dust may have accumulated and ignited.

Edwards said an addition on the rear of the house was destroyed. The original structure remains sound, he said, but was damaged by heat, smoke and water.

The fire was called in by Knapp, who noticed it and escaped without injury.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated later at the station.

Firefighters, assisted by off-duty colleagues and the Johnstown Fire Department, were on the scene more than five hours.
